Fred was a student at Westmont College in the early 50s and involved in the Ambassador Quartet. Ruth Kerr of the Kerr Glass Company took 18 people to the 2nd YFCI World Congress in Brussels, Belgium, including Fred’s quartet. After returning from the Congress, Fred was so fired up about evangelism that two businessmen in Santa Barbara asked him to direct the rally there. Over a nine-year period he expanded the YFC ministry north and south into what they called “Tri-Counties YFC.” They had many various programs that reached young people for Christ. It was his privilege to mentor Larry Ballenger and Jim Grindle (whom we also interviewed) and to see them become lifelong YFC directors and pastors.
