Jay describes how he was flying to Seattle about 1980 for the first Johnny Cash Youth Special when a man on the plane told him “Tomorrow you will be the happiest man in America.” Sure enough, when Johnny made the first appeal, 80 phones lit up immediately, and they did very well. Other organizations jumped on that Johnny Cash bandwagon later but the TV stations raised the costs considerably. Barbara Mandrell also helped out, and Johnny joined the YFC Board of Directors.
