Appointments are one of the RMA’s that leaders tend to let slip through their fingers- not because they don’t want to do them, but because it is often hard to schedule an appointment.  Students have school, sports, and sometimes are simply reluctant to meet with a leader because they’re scared of the depth of conversation.  Now that school is out and summer is in full swing, there are no excuses for not doing appointments with students.

There are so many reasons to fight through the difficulty of scheduling an appointment and dive in with a student. Three simple reasons are…

1. It’s an opportunity to get to know a student’s story better
2. It’s an opportunity to address a specific need
3. It’s an opportunity to connect a student’s story to Jesus’ story

The question you should be asking then is not “why to have appointments,” but “HOW?” How do I set up an appointment during the summer?

First, you have to ask.  Very rarely will a student ask you to meet for an appointment.  Most of the time, you have to initiate.  The good news is that if you ask, most of the time the answer will be yes. Students crave a relationship with an adult that loves them, so they’ll be flattered that you are willing to pursue spending time together.

Second, you should come prepared.  An appointment is an incredible opportunity that God has given you… don’t take it for granted.  Come having a few things you want to walk away with—even if it’s as simple as learning a student’s story. Another way to be prepared is to have others pray for you while you are meeting with a student(s). Overall being prepared helps ensure that both you and your student feel comfortable.

Finally, follow up.  If all goes as planned, there should be some great steps taken in the relationship because of an appointment.  Follow up with a call or text that just says something like, “Hey, I loved spending some time with you.” If it makes sense, ask the student if they’d like to get together again to do the same thing.

Don’t miss out on great opportunities in the summer for appointments and let them slip through your fingers. They will definitely be worth the time and effort given!
