In YFC chapters with multiple staff and multiple ministries, a Campus Life director plays multiple roles. On one hand, you are the CEO of your ministry site, and probably the only staff person who wakes up Monday morning mostly concerned about your school. You face the challenge of balancing Relational Ministry Actions to effectively build Christ-sharing relationships with lost kids while leading a ministry team, a Campus Life Core Team, a community support team, and a personal support team. In addition you are expected to be a contributing member of a church, a good spouse, parent, child, grandchild, and remember to walk your dog. Crazy!

On the other hand, you are part of a YFC staff team and together you own the local YFC mission.  Unfortunately, it is way too easy to give the least you can get away with at the staff team level and just take care of your own ministry site. The YFC staff team is the foundation all the ministry site teams are built on – especially now with more and more part-time site leaders.  It takes an intentional effort to overcome our egos and personality differences and let “our love for one another” be so compelling it draws others to Jesus.

One of the most challenging “staff team” books circulating is “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team,” by Patrick Lencioni. Using a fictitious company he brilliantly challenges teams to take a look at how they function. If any of the following dysfunctions sound like your team, grab the book and see what you can learn!
