Position Summary

The Assistant Coach/Trainer is a temporary position. The Assistant reports to the Executive Director and serves as a key part of the leadership team. Under the guidance and leadership of the Program Director/Head Coach, he/she will provide a secure and friendly place where Christian athletes will learn and experience the Christian faith. He/she will serve as a mentor and basketball coach and will support an environment where youth participants develop a strong personal faith, with a focus on our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The Assistant Coach/Trainer is also responsible for

  • conducting practice sessions and drills to improve individual skills;
  • planning and organizing practices and games, including arranging facilities, equipment, and other resources needed for the team's activities;
  • demonstrating basketball skills and techniques;
  • assisting with strength training and nutrition programs;
  • developing and recommending strategies to the head coach for a successful basketball program;
  • scouting future opponents;
  • ensuring all equipment and facilities are maintained;
  • organizing team activities;
  • facilitating and supervising training sessions and workouts; and
  • establishing a written set of aims, goals, objectives, and values for the basketball program.

Essential Functions

Ministry Health

  • Develop Christian athletes, while implementing an exemplary basketball program that will effectively and relentlessly pursue victory without sacrificing Christian character
  • Provide a secure and friendly place where Christian athletes will learn and experience the Christian faith
  • Serve as a mentor and basketball coach
  • Support an environment where youth participants will develop a strong personal faith focused on our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
  • Model Christian guidance, discipleship, fellowship, and servant leadership in a spiritually, emotionally, physically supportive environment
  • Use basketball to provide purposeful leadership where prayer is central
  • Help youth with their calling by connecting young athletes with God
  • Keep Executive Director and Program Director/Head Coach aware of ministry health, progress and challenges

Ministry Growth

  • Celebrate what God is doing for and through the program
  • Give youth the opportunity to serve and recruit others
  • Take the ministry to schools, churches, and neighborhoods
  • Partner with like-minded groups to identify individuals to serve as mentors and/or coaches to YFC student athletes
  • Assist Program Director/Head Coach in developing long term vision for ministry

Donor Development

  • Participate in fundraising efforts hosted by the organization
  • Build relationships with donors
  • Solicit sponsorship of our basketball program from local businesses and corporations through personal contact
  • Research grant opportunities

Primary and Secondary Steward Responsibilities

Employees may be assigned a Primary Steward of any of the following:  Volunteer(s), Donor(s), Vendor(s), Chapter(s), and Process, Standard and Best Practices (PSBPs).

All Employees are assigned the role of Secondary Steward, which plays a supporting role to the Primary Steward to serve a chapter in a specific way, for a specific timeframe as determined by the Primary Steward. Secondary Stewards can be assigned to focus on specific management issues like YFC compliance, legal, risk, strategic planning, fund development coaching, staff development coaching, new ministry site development, process stewardship or a variety of other equipping roles.

Spiritual Responsibilities

Because the overriding religious purpose and mission of Youth for Christ USA is to communicate and introduce the Gospel of Jesus Christ to young people and their families, and in that regard to make, educate and encourage life-long disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, it is very important that you as an employee in the movement of Youth for Christ be recognized as an associate minister of the Gospel. As an employee of Youth for Christ and an associate minister of the Gospel, YFC expects all employees to:

  • Seek God’s guidance and wisdom, through prayer and meditation, for the organization as a whole as well as for specific ministry initiatives.
  • Participate and lead regular times of prayer, devotion and worship as a regular aspect of your role within YFC.
  • Model empathy, humility and care for all people. This includes promoting equity and inclusion in word and in the practice of faith expression. YFC employees will have an opportunity to be commissioned or licensed as a minister of the Gospel through the established Youth for Christ process, and/or ordained by an outside body recognized by Youth for Christ USA.

  • Exhibit a discernable interest in his/her work and ministry

Credentials Required & Preferred Education

  • Education required: High School Diploma (minimum)
  • Experience required: Previous experience with basketball (playing, coaching, etc.)
  • Knowledge: Solid understanding of basketball, good leadership skills
  • Character: Strong Christian leader who has exhibited integrity

Fundraising Responsibilities

All YFC employees are expected to regularly and actively participate in faithful activities that advance the stewardship functions of YFC/USA. These activities will include—but are not limited to— extending invitations to fund raising events, recruiting personal circle of influence/YFC donor contacts, sending letters, handwritten notes, personal calls, and personally ministering to donor contacts.
